Hey,
There is no silver bullet in antivirus software. Any antivirus software is going to need updates due to the ever increasing amount of viruses being created. You're best off having 2-3 antivirus programs. You can perform a search on google for a few of them and any one of them is good.
Regards,,
Brandon

The best FREE anti-virus software out there are either "AVG" or "Avast", both have a good record for detecting viruses, on many online surveys.
I have tried both programs, and I found Avast to be the better of the two packages, it has a cleaner interface, and performs many additional functions that it appears AVG does not (like analysing and recording important systems files on your computer, allowing you to recover them should a virus destroy them).
I quite agree with your opinion of Norton, I have used many versions of it, and all were terrible resource hogs...never again.
In my opinion for PAID software you can't get any better than Kaspersky, it's low on system resources, but the best at detecting and preventing infection.

Kaspersky. However, what system do you have? Windows Vista, is very picky about anything you try to load. The box will say if it is Vista ready. You need to make a back up copy, if you download a anti virus and it should be able to destroy all spy-ware.

I use Windows Live OneCare. It is designed by Microsoft to be used with Windows, so it doesn't slow down your computer very much. I got it when I got fed up with Norton. It is much better in my opinion, and I have never had a problem with it. Here is their website, where they have downloads.
