the impreza 2.5 H-4 has 168 hp which is plenty to get you from point A to B and has great handling, dependability and very reliable. The AWD is one of the best systems in the world. They are well engineered cars and keep the maintenance up with keep it going for up to 300,000 miles and keep up the resale value.
In answer to the question go for i and go with the i. The wrx is nice with 227 hp is also nice but insurance and the price of the car will be a bit more because of the turbo. Either way Subaru is the way to go!

pay no attention to pimpinin719, he's a liar.
Anyhow, it depends on what you want. The 2.5i gets fantastic gas mileage, and has ok power. It's not the fastest thing around but still fun to drive and quite torquey. Go test drive them. The major differences between a wrx and 2.5i are the power, and the brakes. Also, the latest gen imprezas (what I call pig nosed, the 06+) all models have 2.5l across the board, the addition of the turbo makes a big difference in the WRX

Specs for your car the 03 Jetta HP 180 @ 5500 RPM
Torque 174 @ 1950 RPM
transmission 5 speed
If you can get rid of the Jetta just go right ahead because I used to have one and after 50k miles the turbo started to leak oil, even the head was leaking everywhere, those 1.8 T engines are really not good.
Here is the regular 06 Impreza with the 2.5i
HP 173 @ 6000 RPM
Torque 166 @ 4400 RPM
Transmission 5 speed
My friend has one and it runs great, it is quick but go for the 5
speed, you will love it, is better on the highway than the Jetta, it has better stability on cornering, and the breaks are awesome. And you were talking about a fast car, well with AWD with a 5 speed you have a great takeoff, you should go test drive it.

Hi, I have actually had all three cars in this question... I had the same jetta u do, I put 60k and experienced no problems... Then I traded it for a 2003 2.5rs... The jetta is a nice car, but if ur already experiencing technical problems at 38k I would trade it in... For what? I dont think the 2.5 is a good idea, especially if ur looking for power! They have around 174 horses.. Which was not even close enough horse power for me... I put about 60k on this car also... I didnt experience any problems at all... It ran good, but it didnt have enough horse power... I then traded the car for a 2004 wrx which i currently have now... I love the car... It has plenty of power to work with... But I actually bought the wrx used... It had 18k on it when I bought it.... Im sure u wont experience any of the problems I have... The guy bought the car new for around 30 thousand.... Its a limited... He then upgraded 10 thousand worth of parts... The parts are, header back 3" exhaust system, 20lb boost turbo, sti intercooler, k&n air intake, full suspension, sti wing, bigger than sti exhaust, turbo, air/fuel, and oil pressure gauges... I paid $19,500 for it... The only problem I experienced was the 20lb boost turbo was just too much for the small block... therefore I blew a rod bearring... If u get a new one u wont even get a chance to experience this problem because u wont have that huge turbo... So all in all the wrx is the best candidate!

If you can afford to finance or not the extra few thousand for the
WRX it is the one to have. I was looking at VW's before I deceide on my 06' Saab 92x aero, which is almost identical to the WRX sans a few upgrades. The turbo will always be easier to sell and hold its value better. A friend who was envying mine for the last several months just picked up an 06' WRX wagon
for a little under $22k. And most of the aftermarket performance upgrades are for the turbo model. With a few upgrades (up pipeand reprogram and a few you can get 280 hp close to the STI performance range for about $1500. $8500 less than the STI. And its so fun to drive!

Get the 2.5 Impreza. All turbo cars are disasters waiting to happen. The 2.5 is a hard car to find used. people love them so much. Don't believe me, do a search of used wrx's versus used 2.5's and compare results. The 2.5 is quick but not 'fast'. This car will last a long time.

I didn't know VW still made Jetta's. Whoa, learn something new everyday. Get the new Nissan Sentra instead of the two you are looking at.
