With Platys it's dificult to tell sometimes when they will deliver. Some stop eating a day or two before and sometimes they will try to hide a lot more, but really there is no one rule that applies to all female platys. Watch her and see if she is acting differently than normal and that should be a clue. The best thing to do is have her in a seperate tank a few days before you think it's time so she doesn't surprise you.

The platty turns red with it's about to have fry. Take it out of the bag, smack it a little, and tell it to shut the hell up. It'll stop with the fry.

there is usually a discharge from her bottom just before and all your other fish will be swimming very close to her ready to eat the fry as they are born

It will have a grave spot in its stomach and get very plump. The larger and darker the spot gets the close you are to birth. Make sure you have hiding places for the babies or the parents will eat them. good Luck

The main thing to look for is the gravid spot, a dark spot on the female's abdomen. She should also look very fat.
