Well the concise of opinion says it more or less means Laugh out Loud and I really only learned this the other week when someone posted a similar question to yours. However where I am lol normally means Lots of love so I guess you need to judge from the messages you get!!!

I used to think it meant "laughing out loud" too. However, people kept saying it in totally inappropriate contexts.
e.g.
Me: I am having a really difficult time at work, I miss you, etc.
Answer: LOL see you next week.
I eventually asked and it turned out this person thought it meant "Lot's of Love".

LOL man! Well, means nothing more than Laughing Out Loud. It's become a word in itself which denotes amusement, joy, humor, even ridicule. But generally, it just should mean you found something funny when chatting on the net. Other variations of LOL are LMAO, laughing my posterior off. LMFAO, laughing my f***ing posterior off.
