Are there are novels detailing the struggle between mainstream science and religion?

For an English assignment, I am to write an essay of at least five paragraphs in which I must talk about the reality of the issue (the conflict between popular interpretation of science) and religion (more specifically, Christianity) and compare and contrast that with how fictional literature depicts the issue. I've got Inherit the Wind, but that's it. Any suggestions?

'Contact' by Carl Sagan. Its was also made into a movie. It deals with this issue quite a bit in the sub-plot.
