any material made of cotton, or terry cloth will substitute for a diaper. Also, apply large sanitary pads inside the cloths to absorb more until diapers can be purchased. Create a square of plastic from a plastic bag, or even if you have a huge ziploc bag, use them as cloth diaper covers to prevent moisture from leaving the cloths. If baby is tiny, washcloths folded in half would be sufficient. Disposable diapers haven't been around forever, so it takes some thought to creating what used to be the norm.
Also apply ointment to the 'diapered' area, to prevent a rash when using a rougher type of cloth if that is all you readily have available. After use, rinse fabric and wash in mild baby soap and bleach. After cleansing and drying, they may be stored for future emergency use for baby.

If you have a really soft dish or hand towel, you can pin it like a diaper - provided you have some diaper pins. Be careful not to stick your baby with the pin. Can you send someone out to pick up some diapers for you or borrow some from a friend? Another thought - and it's probably a crackpot idea - is if your baby has a pair of snug panties, tape a sanitary napkin to the inside of that. It might be a bit leaky, but could do in a pinch.

I would say use a small towel cup towel or hand towel and put a sanitary napkin inside. If you don't have any safety pins try duct tape. You might try the plastic bag idea over the top as well. If you don't have any maybe plastic wrap? If you can get a hold of some toddler undies line them with a sanitary napkin. That's a tough situation. Good luck. Maybe a toddler swim suit for boys. Or maybe someone has some swim diapers packed away. I hope you have neighbors around to check.

Don't stress, it's just time to improvise. Babies didn't have "diapers" for centuries.
Just try old towels folded and pinned, or old clothes. You can even use menstrual pads or mop pads inside. Old- too small diapers can work the same way. You could also see about borrowing some from neighbors if you have any with small children.
You'll have to change the baby more often using makeshift diapers but it can be done. Hope you can get out soon!

I live in upstate NY and I had this happen. Well we ended up getting out and walking and it was 1 degree outside. Luckily the store is not too far. If you can't do that then use a t-shirt or receiving blanket and wrap it around the baby and try to pin it or tape it. It's not the best but I guess it will do for a little while till you can get to the store. I would just throw it away.

As a first time mom, heres some advice, always make sure you have plenty of formula and milk for when situations like this arise. You don't want your baby to go without and I am sure you saw that he/she was running low on diapers before the BIG storm.

Use towels or whatever to make homemade diapers
in the future...pay attention to the weather! Stock up before a storm on all neccessities, including diapers, formula, toliet paper, milk, water in case, batteries for flashlights, candles and some food that does not require gas or electric to cook.

use anything you can get your hands on. A t-shirt, receiving blankets, anything that will absorb moisture. Put it on the baby like a diaper and change it every hour or so. You'll probably end up ruining quite a few articles of clothing, but your baby will be o.

Any towels, old blankets, you could cut up? Cut an old sheet to place between baby and what ever you use so it will be soft against the skin.
A trick my MIL told me when we were stuck using cloth diapers for awhile: cut an old sheet to put against the baby. When it poos, throw the sheet away and you won't have such a mess diaper to clean.

Hand towels! They are cut the same size as cloth diapers. (I use cloth at home and disposable when we are out for longer than a few hours). Hopefully you have some safty pins that you can use to keep them closed. as for a protective barrier you are on your own. I would recommend that you fold a towel inside to double up. As for those who told you to throw them away afterwards...any soldis get flushed down the toilet and then wash in warm water with non chlorine bleach and put them in your rag drawer..you can use them again somewhere. Good Luck
