J wire stop lock is what you need - www.j-wire.com - download the free trial - then get the full programme if you like it - but it does exactly what it says on the tin!

This can be used at home and out and about and encrypts your wireless signal from your laptop, so does not rely on the Security of your router, which means it is safe to use at say, Starbucks

At home, make sure that you have secured the network by setting up a WEP or WPA password.

Besides a virus software, you should also have a couple spyware programs such as Skybot Seek&Destroy and Ad-Aware SE Personal - free at http://download.com and alternate run one of them weekly. Also a firewall program (the one included with Windows is only so/so) such as ZoneAlarm also free at download.com

Beyond that, use common sense. Do not open strange e-mails. Avoid free downloads. Avoid peer to peer sharing programs. And do not share your hard drive when on a public network.

I'd get a good firewall as well
Try zonealarm (the basic edition is free) or something similar and make sure you have spyware protection on.

Run a full antivirus scan at least once a month.

Test your security try some on-line programs like Nortons on-line system check or other similar ones.

When at home use a WPA-PSK key or something similar so only you and who you want to access the router.

You have to configure your wireless router to use encryption/network key. WEP 64 bit and 128 bit encryption is one of the highest security wireless protocols that your router probably supports, or you can just use WPA and have a key that locks your network so no one can mooch off your wireless..
