I never had any luck with home remedies and I tried several that were listed above. I didn't even have luck with the over the counter medicines (although I hear Abreva works well but that came out after I went to the doctor). I use prescription Valtrex and Zovirax. If you get them frequently, you'll need to be on Valtrex for a few months to supress them in your immune system. Make sure to keep you hands clean, because you can spread them to others. Good luck to you! They are so painful!

Here is a quick method to get rid of a cold sore that I find helps. Take a dab of some kind of mineral clay face masque and dab it on the cold sore so that it is completely covering the affected area. Do this and leave it on overnight when you are sleeping or when you will be home for a few hours. I do this at the first sign of a cold sore and it dries it out before it can even become a full-blown cold sore. Give it a try. I hope it helps!!

Vodka. Try and let some dribble out of your mouth onto the sore.As you swig from the bottle. Two things will happen. There will be a cooling effect from the liquid and the alchohol will dehydrate the sore thus reducing the size and the redness. There should also be a pleasant side effect. This should take the form of a sense of overall well being, and you should also stop worrying about the cold sore. Try and do this on a friday and by monday all should be well. By the way,I'm not a real doctor.Just passing on personal experience. But good luck. I know .

swish an antiseptic mouthwash over the cold sore for 30 seconds, repeat if needed. It won't go away immediately. Usually if you do it at night, it will be gone in the morning. If you don't have mouthwash, you can use rum, whisky, or other alcoholic beverages, as long as it is not beer or something with yeast. Don't drink it, just swish it around the sore and spit it out. The alcohol is what gets rid of the sore.

I REALLY wanted you to know that you can EASILY never have to deal with another horrible, awful, nasty cold-sore for the rest of your life!!

I got them every winter my whole life until 3 years ago (I'm 36 now) and they were the BANE of my existence...the whole process took weeks to heal and would leave a scar for at least 2 months sometimes!

I was reading a message board on www.curezone.org and discovered the PERFECT remedy for both healing them and preventing them completely:
OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT

So, I buy the liquid tincture by "HerbPharm" and it has not failed me ONCE...Whenever I'm feeling drained, tired, stressed, or get that tingly feeling on my lip, I just load up on this stuff.

This is the one I buy:

You can also get Olive Leaf at Whole Foods Market, and other natural food stores.

Very cheap.

The first time I tried it, I was actually halfway into a major eruption and I drank a bunch of the extract in some water.
AS I WAS DRINKING the stuff down, I could feel the swelling on my lip shrinking...I was in such shock--I ran to the mirror--it was shrinking before my eyes and within ten minutes my lip had returned to NORMAL...I began kissing the bottle of Olive Leaf...yeah, I really did!!

I had tried everything in the past...I can't begin to tell you what I went through...and it's now been 3 YEARS since I've had one!

I've been in the Alternative Medicine field for some time now, and offer individualized consultations:

I read in a very old medical book to get rid of cold sores, you should put your own ear wax on it. I can't see myself doing it, but that is what the book said to do.

Once you get rid of the cold sore you should throw your toothbrush away too, otherwise you will keep getting reinfected.
IM me if you really want to get rid of them b4 they start and you are willing to try anything.

take dozes of l-lysen and zinc. They are found in your vitiamin isle. You can keep putting the cold sore meds on but if you want fast relief and want them to stop coming go for the vitiamins. Take them every time you get a cold to prevent them from coming again. But head for walmart now.
