Depends on the make and model. Go to the website of the manufacturer and look up the model. Under its specs it should tell you what the maximum amount of memory you can have is, and what type/speed of memory you would need to purchase to upgrade it.

If you have an empty spot open then most likely yes. You need to find out the memory configuration for your motherboard. Most of the time any laptop 4 years old and newer will support 1GB at least, so if its not older then that, open the memory latch on the bottom of your laptop and see if you have another open spot. Its a possibility you have 2x256MB sticks and in that case you would have to get all new RAM to get much higher then 512..

Only if the motherboard has the capability of the upgrade. If you don't know the specifications for your laptop, go to the manufacturer's website and look up the specs for the exact model number of your laptop.
