Our dwarf hamster's left ear is bleeding. At first, we thought maybe she got it caught on something in the cage, but it now looks like it's bleeding just inside the ear. There's enough blood that it drips down the side of her face but it's not free flowing.

We see the blood only sporadically as she usually quickly cleans it up. It has been going on for several days, but she is active and behaving normally.

Any ideas what could be causing this, or what we should be doing?

It sounds like it has a scab that the hamster is scratching off causing the bleed each time. I would take it to the vets and see if he can cauterise the damage quickly to stop the bleeding and before an infection sets in to the wound.

There are some sprays that can cure such cases. Try asking at your local pet store for a suitable animal spray.

I guess it could be due to an infection.

If things still get worse, get her to the vet.

Does she scratch herself frequent? If so, bring her immediately to the vet as something could be in her ear... like a tiny insect.

i have 3 hamsters and the same thing happened to one of them just 2 weeks ago. at first i thought it was nothing but a few days later his right paw was bleeding and his eye was swollen. when i took it to the vet, it turns out that it's some sort of allergy or something. the vet prescribed an ointment and advised that i should give my hammy at least 2 drops of vit c everyday to prevent them from getting sick. he also advised to put the sick hammy in a separate cage while he's still recovering because it's in their nature to kill the weaker one in their environment.

my advise would be to bring your hammy to a vet just to be safe. my hamster's fine now, i'm sure yours will be too.

I don't know about where you live, but here vet's do not work on hamsters. I called every vet in the tri-county area to get someone just to clip our hamsters teeth. NO ONE. Unfortunately hamsters are considered disposable pets. She may have scratched down to deep, I'm not really sure. If she's acting normal let her be. Nature will take it's course.

Take it to the vet idmetiately! It could be infected. If you don't fix it, it could cause death to your hamster.

You might want to turn down your stereo...how are YOUR ears? Can you hear me now? How many fingers am I holding up?
