I have been around cattle for 50 years. I have never seen our cows all lay down at the same time. There is bound to be at least one or two that are up. Perhaps they serve as sentinels. Cattle have ways of communicating that we can't understand. I have seen one cow stay with 5 or 6 calves while the calves' mothers come to where we are to eat. How do they decide who gets to babysit? It has to be communication somehow. Another thing I saw was a group of cows standing in a circle with their calves in the middle of the circle. Later we saw a coyote in the pasture. They knew about it and were protecting their calves. Who saw it first and how did they tell the other cows? Perhaps they are far more intelligent than we give them credit for or are able to communicate in a way we can't see or hear. It's fun to watch them, you learn something just about every time.

And besides that I am not a cow, how would I knokw what they think? Why do humans follow other ones? Its just the way things are, I suppose....

They all lay down when it is going to rain.

Besides they are so bored, they do as the other guy, thinking there's something to it.
