I am looking to buy a Trench Coat in a earth tone color. I found one I will order, its a light spring brown DKNY Metallic All Weather Trench Coat? I know you can wear pants under a trench. My question is, when wearing a dress under the coat, can the dress be below the hem line of the coat? If its ok how much of the dress hem line is ok to show below the trench?

i have a variety of trench coats for this reason. For the most part when I wear a dress, I usually have it shorter than my coat. I think it looks a bit odd to have your dress hanging out from the bottom. I would go for a full length trench coat that hits about your lower calf/top of ankle.

But usually whatever you want to do is fine.

Whatever. I think it deepens on the length of the coat itself. If it's very short I would not have worn a very long dress underneath. If it's short it would be nice to show that there is something beneath - a dress or a skirt...

i understand where you are coming from. Yeah, while you theoretically can wear whatever you like under a trench, it's my opinion that it looks better when you CANT see the dress under the trench. I just think that it loks unkempt or something. But thats just me!!

don't let your dress show under the coat ... its looks like a slip or something.
