I have a 2000 Ford Escort. It has 130,000 miles. When my foot is off the gas it starts coughing almost immediately when its warm or cold, then it dies but will restart fine. If it coughs for a minute or two before it dies, the inside of the car starts smelling like exhaust or gas or something I cant tell. I have replaced plugs, wires, air idle control valve, new gasket seals, and it says check engine. I always have to 2-foot it to be able to drive.

it could be a few things.. but since the check engine light is on.. I would goto Auto zone rent the computer.. look under your dash and plug it in... get the codes.. the auto zone guy should be able to help you... once you have the codes and problem I bet it says something along the lines of.. cat is bad.. which if you have someone to do it.. you can buy a cat from auto zone from like $39.99 to $69.99... and have someone cut or unclamp the other one.. and reclamp or weld the new one in.. clear the codes with the Auto zone computer and your good...if you dont have someone to do the work... I would goto one of those free inspection places.. like

Meineke
or
Midas

and have them look at it

I think they both charge if they hook the computer up and get the codes for you..

but it sounds like your cat is chocking the engine down...
need to get this fixed driving with 2 feet will... in a few weeks mess up your brakes by heating up the rotors... if you have to drive with 2 feet... try and keep the brake foot off the brakes as much as you can

Like Mikey and frank f have suggested. You did not get the completed tale. there is not any way the police or anybody besides the undeniable fact that the owner of the vehicle is going to ought to pay for damages and prefer suggested the following is why. If spikes are used on a motorized vehicle, it grow to be maximum in all probability in a pursuit. this signifies that the driver is breaking the regulation for no longer pulling over. (regardless of if it grow to be the incorrect vehicle) At this aspect the driver is going to be arrested and is committing against the law. The police use spike strips to end the motorized vehicle, and driver is arrested. Any harm to the motorized vehicle it is brought about is the duty of the driver or proprietor at this aspect.

Well your on the right track, your eliminating things. Try running fuel injector cleaners in your fuel. one can per tank full, do this about 2or 3 times. However it may be the emission control valve. Try cleaning the injectors first run some high octane fuel if you can.
good luck

I'd do what (Wheeler) said.

I've rented the OBD scanners from my local Autozone here in SoCal, and found many answers to car trouble over the years, have saved soo much $ doing this myself and as long as you know how to do the job, you wont need the repair shop anymore.

Best wishes,

You have to have it scanned to retrieve the trouble code that the computer has stored(the check engine light). this will guide you in the right direction before throwing more parts at it.
