How can everyone out their moan and groan about england banning smoking in public places. The difference it has made to scotland is immense. Stop going on about your human rights etc and go visit a cancer ward in your local hospital. There are innocent barstaff getting passive smoking because smoking is still allowed in pubs etc. People keep saying well they should work somewhere else, why should they? They need a job too.
I am not anti smoking - I am a smoker myself and the fact that the smoking ban in glasgow happened well I moaned about it before it happened then realised, actually its great, I dont smoke half of what I used to and I enjoy having fun in a club which is smoke free and coming home with my clothes still smelling fresh and my hair clean.
All of you against this should shutup and realise the facts that are all against you.

My rant was provoked by another discussion - yes people are allowed freedom but it does not ask that much of them to go outside the pub and smoke. When this ban happens in England smokers will realise that it works for them TOO not just me or most of scotland. smoking leads to cancer - proven fact. Maybe smokers dont want to quit well so be it they might get cancer, but don't make people breathe in their smoke and cause them to maybe get cancer. Its selfish and unfair on all those non smokers out there.

Actually I think you will find I never switchecd to liking the ban because it made me smoke less - if you were a smoker you would know that cutting down and giving up takes a long time - its been a year.
and actually I am ENGLISH not scottish and us people that live in scotland don't mind the smoking ban, people still go pubbing and people still go clubbing
Taking Ireland for instance - since 2004 - its win win situation - not only is the air inside pubs much cleaner, but the lung health of pub staff has already improved significantly.
SO i suggest you do not attack me because I am by far not the only person who lives in Scotland that thinks this.
Did you know that passive smoking in the work place in london estimates 8 people dying in result of this?
I suggest you read up on your research before calling all this rubbish.

Bud#21 I am a smoker and have been for the past 5years. Most of my smoker friends agree with what I am saying - just because we are bringing risks to our lives, we should not bring this onto others.
Weatherspoons pubs have banned smoking for ages now - and they are still packed with punters!

oh child? Do not patronise me, and yes I have read george orwells books, but please we're talking about saving lives and you think its the end of the world. If you have such a problem with the gov and what they do, go and vote for someone else in the elections.

My sister owns a pub near Glasgow and another sister manages it. Both work between 35 and 50 hours a week.

Before the smoking ban they had numerous colds, sore throats, chesty coughs and felt lethargic - neither smoked, but a lot of the customers did.

Since the ban both are far healthier and staff sick days on the whole have gone down. My sister can also take her toddler to work with her knowing it is in a safe, clean and smoke free environment (licensee's children are allowed in the pub) so she gets to spend quality time as a parent as well as an employer. She could never have one this before the ban.

Many people argue alcohol is just as bad as cigarettes, but one person having one pint effects no one bar themselves. One person having one cigarette affects everyone in the room.

As for the comment of if people work in a bar they should live with the smoke. Why should someone who has gone to university or college and put thousands of pounds out to start a business get ill because of other people.

You can choose to be zoo keeper, but you don't go into the job expecting to get eaten. So why should you die of cancer because you chose to run a pub?

The ban will only make things better for the staff in England.

I have always detested smoking, objected to the smell coming from smokers, the smell after being in a place where smokers were, and breathing in the disgusting fumes. Have never smoked in my life, have a mother and father-in-law who did and both died of Lung Cancer. I live Scotland and it is wonderful visiting restaurants etc not having to breath in the fumes. However, there has been numerous discussion and arguements about why smokers can't have a separate room in a pub or whatever. As a non smoker I would like to see people who insist on smoking having somewhere in most places to smoke, to be honest not because I am considerate of their needs but because since the smoking ban came in I am utterly disgusted and even twice have been sick as so many more people smoke in the street, outside restaurants and pubs and however hard you try you breath in the awful fumes. I think I even object to this more that it is my fresh air that is being taken from me. Smoking should be banned in the street and they should be given somewhere to puff, if they have decided to risk their lives not much we can do about it. You have to have some compassion for these people as it is an addiction and who else would stand in all sorts of weather looking pathetic, not to mention the look alike 'sheep pens' in our airports. How degrading to need to go in there? All the protesting, shouting and threats about what will happen when the ban comes to England were the same here and Ireland but at the end of the say, sorry smokers but your are like 'lambs to the slaughter' and it will go ahead and will just be accepted. This time next year, not all but like the person who posted the question will be very happy with the difference it has made. PS Since there has been a few 'rants' not relevant to the smoking question, instead of being annoyed at Scotland for making it's own rules would you not be better asking why your country is so much behind us and do something about it?. Just think how long Scotland has had free care for the elderly, no university tuition fees etc. We can't be that wrong since you all have or want to follow with such issues.

As a social smoker and an Irishman the following positives have come from this:

1. More beer gardens and more beer gardens with space heaters - always good
2. Get to talk to random people outside, a lot of fun
3. No smelly manky smoke inside causing watery eyes, bad clothes smell, coughing, etc.
4. If you don't smoke you don't stink the next day.
5. You smoke less, and only go for a smoke when you really want to

I'm sure others could ad to this. There was a lot of angry statements in the press before the ban started but since it's come in, there seems to be only positive reviews. Personally I love it. The only annoyed people are the vintners association.

If you want negatives:

1. Fart smell! The smell of farts was horrible at first - but they seem to have dealt with that now.
2. Non-smokers are left inside on their own sporadically.

Yes smokers have your human right to smoke in public places and to give yourself cancer and the other diseases associated with smoking. As long as your human right does not infringe my human right to not inhale your smoke and also suffer because of it, cancer etc.
Many pubs cling to the point that if they banned smoking now before the July 1st deadline they would lose business. Two pubs near to me banned smoking totally over a year ago. Do you know what? Those pubs and their restaurants are packed every night including Mondays and for the food it is necessary to book 2 weeks ahead. The only business pubs etc will lose is the regular 1 or 2 drinks a time person that sits all evening and smoke a 10 cigarettes. The real money and profit will come from the liberated non smokers. I have not entered a pub now for 10 years because the smoke causes me to cough and need a change of clothes. Non smokers of the world unite. Roll on July 1st 2007.

i am in scotland and its the best thing that ever happened it should have been done ages ago, i can now go out for a drink and dont go home smelling of stale smoke, plus going to a restaurant you no longer have smoke spoiling youre meal!! people were up in arms when the ban was first suggested in scotland but everyone seems to have accepted it -even some rough pubs, there is one slight problem though it does split the conversation sometimes when the (antisocial)smokers head outside every 5 mins, just stop smoking and the world would be a much healthier place and not so smelly !!!!!!!

I used to smoke and I never smoked in public places where other people were affected by what I did - I smoked in the privacy of my own home.

I live in scotland and selfish smokers (who complain non stop about the smoking ban) smoke right outside the front doors of the college I go to. Which is nice as I make the effort to wash etc and also went through giving up smoking cold turkey.

I think that if you have a habit as dangerous to other peoples health then you should do in where it doesnt effect anyone else - I mean everybody would complain if there was a junkie shooting up in front of them.

Good question girl. As usual you'll get a load of abuse thrown at you from other users. That's why yahoo answers is so rubbish.

Anyway, I'm a non-smoker - I hate the smell of fags. I've been to Ireland twice & it was really nice waking up the next day after a night out with no cough & no smoke on my hair or clothes. I've got mild asthma & passive smoking has done no good for my lungs what so ever.

Well done girl.

Next time try asking a question rather then going on a self gratifying tirade about how great the culling of the freedom of the MAJORITY of the country is since you managed to cut down because of it.

I was a smoker, I quit on the first of january, cold turkey, just to prove a point, so well done to you you have no willpower of your own.

Yes visit your local cancer ward, and try to find someone suffering from "LUNG CANCER, directly caused by ciggarette smoke", not skin cancer, breast caner, or any other kind, Have you found a single patient yet... Well done, you belived the propagada of other self righteous people, who like those whiney socialpaths who claim they never come out because of the smoke when we all know the real reason is they also are so ******* pathetic that no-one wants them out to ruin it.

There goes your dumb arguments about the bar tenders... OMG every heard of PPM (Points Per Million), look it up, those "Dangerous Chemicals in ciggaretes" just don not contain even 0.0001 of the amount required to cause harm, and when that is distributed to your average size pub that amount drops so low it is pointless to even try to express the number.

Half the pubs around where I live have reclassified themselves as private member clubs so the government can't touch them, and I really hope that fact really pisses you and those other sad acts off.

Keep taking our freedom, we will fight back, remeber you have the freedom to drink elsewhere, sit away from the smokers, and the freedom to stick it up your ****.

Now quick jump on the bandwagon to ban bread, almost everyone in the cancer ward ate it within 48 hours of being diagnosed, as did almost every murderer, rapist, and government offical. BAN THE BREAD!!!!

My goodness what a lot of response. I am a Scot who gave up smoking 18 a day some 6 years ago. I am glad I did because of my health issues. The recent smoking ban makes women looks a bit on the uncomfortable side if they end up outside a pub by themselves surrounded my men. Bit of a toe curler.

By the way, where did all the Big Brother nonsense come from? Scottish politicians ruling the country? Cool.
