I would suggest trying to build your own computer, which is actually what I'm doing today. But since you say you don't have a lot of knowledge about computers, I would say Best Buy or Circuit City are good places to look. What you need in a computer all depends on what you're using your computer for. If you're going to be playing new computer games, I would highly suggest a fast graphics card such as the nvidia geforce 7 series (I would recommend the geForce 7900 or higher. No matter what you do, You probably want a decent amount of memory so that'd be about 2 gigabytes, since I hear Windows Vista is a memory hog. If you're going to be saving a lot of files, I would suggest a very large hard drive with maybe 200 gb of storage space. For a processor, I would recommend AMD Athlon X2 5000+ or better because I have generally found AMD chips to run my games smoother than Intel processors. However, I've heard some great things about the Intel Core 2 Duo processors, so you might want to spend a little more money and go with that. So those are the three things you should look for. Here are some lists of specs you should shoot for depending on your usage.
Word processing/surfing the internet mainly:
AMD Athlon X2 5000+
2 gigs of RAM
200 GB Hard Drive
Integrated Graphics or ATI Radeon X1600 chipset
Gaming:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4+ ghz
2-4 Gigs of RAM
250-300 gig Hard Drive
At minimum, nvidia geForce 7900GS (I would recommend that 7950 GT)
or ATI Radeon x1800 at minimum with crossfire enabled
I would personally look in a PC Gamer magazine for computers because they usually have GREAT deals on gaming machines for relatively cheap. You can't go wrong with a gaming PC because they are powerful and can handle almost any mundane task you throw at it.

Start with what you want to use it for.
For example if it is for computer games pick a game and have a look at the recommended specifications.
Also consider a mac. much more stylish and it tells the world you are a hip and with it creative type.

Hardware configuration is the main thing which you should know to buy a computer which would be known when you consult a person who knows computers and their working. otherwise you can learn from him. It is not that much difficult.
