The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How to Really Start Your Own Business, Fourth Edition by David E. Gumpert
* How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan: Step-by-Step Guide by David E. Gumpert
* What No One Ever Tells You about Starting Your Own Business: Real-Life Start-Up Advice from 101 Successful Entrepreneurs (What No One Ever Tells You About Starting Your Own Business) by Jan Norman
* Business Start-Up Kit by Steven D. Strauss
* Start Your Own Business (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Up) by Rieva Lesonsky

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Wow, there are a lot of bad answers here, so I thought I would help you out.
Firstly you do not need a novel idea or any of that rubbish. I bet if you asked the members of your friends if they could make a better burger than McDonald's they would say yes, But why is it then that Ronald McDonald is making £billions and your friend is not?
Basically it has nothing to do with what product you have, you do not need the cheapest or the best. There is a market for all of these things, just look at a Ford Escort compared to a Aston Martin.
What does make a good business is great business systems, marketing and cashflow management. Its a shame your degree was not in any of those things. Doh only kidding, it really doesn't matter. look at Richardd Branson and Bill Gates, He is the richest mann in the world and he didn't even finish his degree!
There are many different types of business's to chose from:
Network Marketing
Franchise
LLC
Corporation.
They all have different start up costs and they all have different risks. I am glad you have decided to start a business rather than to go look for employment. Good luck in what ever type of business you go for, but before youstart get financially educated or join a reputable network marketing company to learn good business skills before you go jumping straight in at the deep end with no experience or even the theory of how to swim!

Feel free to email me with any questions.
Ben.

First you need an idea that no one else has thought of. Or you need skills, knowledge or experience that you think is equal to or better than that of the competitors. You should have a look at a website such as business eye and also talk to people who have started their own businesses from scratch.
