I've had bad experience with HP, toshiba, and gateway in the past so I'm pretty wary of getting another one of those. Or have those brand name computers improved?

toshiba makes good stuff ... it really is a matter of how a laptop is configured as to how good it is ... also its the user that has alot to do with how the operating system stands up ...

Brands are all the same now, with very little variation in product quality. Generally you'll get what you pay for, so while you shook seek a good sale, don't fall for the cheapest. Apple really does make an awesome computer, and will run windows just fine. Just a word of advice though, 4gb of ram is overkill. There is no reason to do it. 1 is enough for anything, 2 makes sure that you never run out, 3 is paying too much, and nobody uses 4. The processor and video chip are far more important, as are the other accessories you get. It takes about 1.5gb to run Vista with everything running (Aero, sidebar, anti-virus, IE, and a few other things). If you want to do some photo editing then you may benefit from the 2. If you don't, then you probably just wasted money.

It all depends on what you want to use the notebook for, and your price limit. If you're looking for a notebook for office use, or for work, you might want to consider a mac. I had to use one during one of my classes though, and let me tell you, it wasn't a walk in the park. If you've already had experience with a mac than it should be fine. If you want one just to use at home for...whatever you do at home, then a dell should be great. The dell Inspiron (spelling?!) was the one i used for quite a long time and it worked great and was pretty reliable. Dell's are generally reliable. If you're a serious gamer (with deep pockets), alienware offers great notebooks with awesome graphics. If your pockets aren't that big, then a Dell XPS is good too. I don't recommend HP or gateway but Toshiba might have improved. It all depends on what you would use the laptop for so shop around and see what you like. Good luck!

Try a Mac, seriously!

Have to say the IBM's are holding up well in our home business.

From PCMAG:
Apple
Yes, Apple is the king of the notebook world, too. As with desktops, the company's notebook scores are far and away the best of the survey. Its overall score is a 9.1 out of 10. The next highest score? An 8.4.

Lenovo
Lenovo scores phenomenally well for its notebooks (including the popular ThinkPads): significantly better than average in nearly every major notebook category.

well really today's laptops are all quite good, toshiba is a world leading brand in notebook technology, but the quality has gone down a bit. some good laptops that don't really get noticed are isus, ibm, acer, dell. I've had a acer computer for quite a while now and its really done me justice, the only problem with acers is that the battery is never too good.

In my experience in computer repair I would have to number them as follows:
1: Toshiba
2: Acer
3: Sony
4: That's it, that's all I trust. The rest are crap.

In the end, you get what you pay for. The more expensive the laptop, the better quality. Just don't go overboard with paying too much though. Keep it under $1200 with these three companies and you'll have a very nice laptop.

Sony are actually best but are expensive.

As of today ... Cost vise HP & Dell are OK but you don't like HP.

Never touch Gateway .... they rip you off.

Toshiba is also a good brand but you had bad experience with that.

Why don't you go for Apple (if you need it only for home computing only).

Either Sony or Mac but they both are very expensive so if you dont have abunch of money to spend on either of them then i would have to say that HP is a pretty good cheap computer
