jpeg files are compressed and therefore generally smaller than bitmap files.

They are different ways of saving a picture. a bitmap (bmp) stores every single pixel (dot) of a picture. So the files are usually large, but the quality of the picture is high. Jpeg saves files by compressing them. It does not save every single pixel, but uses averaging and other technics to create a smaller file, but some of the quality of the picture is sacrificed. A jpeg will be "fuzzier" then a bit map. Also, everytine a jpeg is edited or resized, it will be reduced in quality.

Jpeg files are used for the Internet and other places were size is more improtant than quality. The smaller the file the better. Bit maps are used by professional photographers, printers, artist, and others were quality is the main issue.

*******JPEG*********
1.JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a lossy compression technique for color pictures.
2.This compression enables people to quickly transmit (send or receive) image files over the Internet.
3.JPEG standards help image files to be compressed to around five percent of their original size, though some details are lost during compression.
4.JPEG performs best on photographs and paintings of realistic scenes with smooth variations of color and tone.
5.JPEG is not frequently used for charts, line drawings, and other iconic or textual graphics.

******BITMAP******
1. is made up of rows and columns of tiny blocks, or pixels.
2. The file sizes of bitmap images can be very large, especially for mural panels and other large graphics.
3.Bitmap images are great for digital printing. They have the ability to produce both very detailed and photo-realistic or very simple images.
4.However, a bitmap image doesn’t rescale well. If blown up using a graphics program, the bitmap image becomes blocky and blurred. If reduced, it loses clarity.
5.Reliability—what you see at 100% is what you get.

A bitmap image is the best quality. A jpeg is compressed and the filesize is many many times smaller. For most purposes you are best using jpegs as the quality loss isn't ussually very big + because the filesize is so much smaller it is easier to manage on your computer and upload/download on the internet.
