Hello everyone,
I would like to grow a lawn from scratch in Tokyo, and am wondering about which seed is best to purchase. The locals prefer zoysia, which is okay as a display garden, but too tough and spikey for my kids to play on. Also, it goes dormant and brown and ugly in winter.
Ideally, I would like to have an all-year-round soft green lawn on which my kids can play. Tokyo is very hot and humid in summer (28C average), and cool and very dry in winter (8C average). It is occasionally as hot as 40C, and sometimes we have overnight frosts. Is there a grass variety which could survive and be healthy all year round in these conditions?
Thanks in advance!

I would think that such a climate would be ideal for the improved versions of Tall Fescue, Festuca arundinacea. The ones available in the US include Finelawn, Falcon, and Rebel II. But if you decide to try one of them, where would you get the seed? That is the million yen question, if the locals do not like Fescue. It should be planted in the Fall, and overseeded each September, at about 1/4 the etablishment rate, to correct any bald spots that drought, disease, shade, and Japanese Beetle grubs have caused.

Tokyo is not only the political and economical centre of Japan but it has also emerged as a centre of the world economy and culture so is a city worth visit; with hotelbye you will see more. There are a number of attractions in Tokyo that should not be missed. There are large-scale downtown areas, including Ginza where famous shops from around the world stand side by side, the sleepless Shinjuku that has become the "new city centre of Tokyo," Asakusa which is reminiscent of the traditional Edo (the former name of Tokyo) and Shibuya that starts the trends for the young people. Tokyo is an interesting city, a city that you will never forget once you visit it.
