I want an ipod but i hate itunes i wish to be able to just 'drag and drop' from my music on pc, none of my mp3's have been converted by itunes to make them compatable with an ipod - but f*ck doing that again!
Also - can you have variable bit rates on ipods and will it allow me to have mp3's compressed at different bit rates?

I hope someone can help or ill have to get the creative Zen!

1) In standard form the Ipod will support VBR files. Files can be encoded at whatever rate you wish, as the software switches to adapt to the file.

2) You can replace the OS of the Ipod with a customized version of Linx. Your Ipod can do a lot more and you shouldn't have to use Itunes to manage your music. I'm not sure if the Linunx system will support VBR. IT should but I'm no expert. I've just seen it done !

3rd option is to get yourself a USB Flash mp3 pen. These act like a normal hard-drive. You literally drag the files on and away you go. Very simple but normally not as comprehensive or well specced to the zen's, Ipod and walkman's of today. Stil worth looking into !
