You are really pushing it! And I like your thinking .... way outside the box!

the true answer is yes,

but to do that, you need a modification to the server program, you have to deal with security a lot more than other connections. You don't want to open up that can of worms. (at least I don't)

AJAX is essentially javascript / XML which are all CLIENT-SIDE technologies. Thus, for security reasons, client-side stuff remains on the client side.

I guess my claim can be contradicted with the use of XMLHttpRequest(), where a client side script can open a connection to a backended server. (That is, after all, what makes AJAX, AJAX)

However, it does just that. Once the connection is opened, you still need a server-side script to handle data processing and transfer.

So in short, the answer is no, you cannot use AJAX to communicate with a database on the server without a backend script.

Isn't the XML portion of AJAX server-side? I thought the server interpreted the XML and converted it into the correct javascript, the javascript is interpreted and run on the client. AJAX can't talk to databases, but you can create user controls that can and do, we have AJAX applications that can talk to databases without doing post-backs, but I'm not sure how that is accomplished...

Theoretically, it's possible; you'd have to write a database client in JavaScript. Practically, no one has done it yet; plus, implementing such a client would require the database server to be accessible from any host, which could pose a security risk...
