Rockets use Newton's third law of motion to accellerate: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Rockets burn fuel and shoot the exhaust out the back end to accellerate in the opposite direction (forward). A rocket must attain escape velocity to leave the earth forever, or it will fall back. Escape velocity can be calculated with this formula: V = (2 · a · r) ^ .5. Accelleration (a) due to gravity at the earth's surface is 32.174 feet/second². The radius (r) is 20,925,000 feet (3,963 miles). (2 · a · r) ^ .5 = 36,694 feet/second, or 6.9 miles per second. That's how fast you need to go to escape the earth's gravity.

They are launched by detonating the fuel. It is a slow explosion which thrusts out a lot of mass from the rockets rear end. This propells the rocket up. (Most boosters, once ignited, can not be turned off)
To overcome the earth's gravitational field the vehicle must reach the so called escape velocity. if this is reached the vehicle travels away from earth on a never ending voyage to go where no one (or very few) have gone before.
If it stays under this velocity it will eventually fall back to earth, a lot of the fusselage burning away in the atmosphere.
An intact return to earth is impossible for a "rocket" since it consits of serveral components which are used up and depleted during lift off. (ans then jetisoned) What returns to earth is the crew compartment on top of the rocket floating down on parachutes.
The trouble is that the rocket's boosters consist mainly of fuel which is in fact coverd by only a little "skin". Once used up the recovery and recycling would be to costly and complicated so is not an option. Rockets are "fly and forget" vehicles.

The rockets are launched on the basis of orbital velocity of the earth. Orbital velocity means if we throw any object with that much velocity it exceeds the gravity of the earth and it wont fall down but it would be revolving around the earth only.

The orbital velocity of the earth is 7km/sec. while launching a rocket they will see that the velocity of the rocket is more than the orbital velocity of the earth.

Yes, there are chances for a rocket to return to the earth if the velocity of the rocket is less than the orbital velocity of the earth which would be only seen when the rocket is damaged.

Hi. Most rockets consist of several stages, the first of which usually return to Earth, but not intact. Also, most rockets launch satellites which are designed to stay in orbit for years and these do not remain intact when the de-orbit.

A Reusable launch systemis a launch vehicle which is capable of launching into space more than once. This contrasts with expendable launch systems, where each launch vehicle is launched once and then discarded.

No true orbital reusable launch system is in use as of August, 2006. The closest example is the partially reusable Space Shuttle. The orbiter, which includes the main engines, and the two solid rocket boosters, are reused after several months of refitting work for each launch. The external fuel drop tank is discarded.

Orbital RLVs are thought to provide the possibility of low cost and highly reliable access to space. However, reusability implies weight penalties such as reentry shielding and possibly a stronger structure to survive multiple uses, and given the lack of experience with these vehicles, the actual costs and reliability are yet to be seen.

Now reusable space vehicles are space shuttles which are partially re-usable.
