This place is very accessible to Central Districts like Orchard Rd, Bugis Street, Chinatown & etc. The hostel is also stragetically located near the main road for your convenience of taking public transportations and there is a supermarket in a nearby shopping mall called Balestier Plaza, with a cinema and a foodcourt as well. Besides that, along the streets of Balestier, there are a whole stretch of nice food stalls, selling delicious snacks & food at night too.

Why not move to Wind field Hostel, Formerly known as Mount Vernon Sec School @ Mount Vernon Road ? Which has many facilities like Internet facility and there is security as well.

I can only reccomend that you try to find the reclusive American writer and poet, Linda J Cirillo, who is somewhere in New Hampshire and see if she knows a good and cheap place for you to stay. Good Luck.
