irony is the other side of sarcasm... is there anyone working here today... of course it all systems normal... thats irony
oh, so you decided to show up and do some work...thats sarcasm.
what cultivates it, well, it has to be intelligence. my wife does great sarcasm, and the thicko's just look at her... duh..yer wot?
they arent capable of understanding the nuances or the language, or the sentence structure. and we have great fun...
ah, thats what getting an education does for you... or is it does to you? i'm not sure.

In order to understand irony, it is necessary to be able to see things from more than one point of view, and have a range of historical/linguistic/literary etc references. A person has to see that not every word used is used literally, meaning can also be implied/inferred.
I believe that everyone on Y!A understoods irony (she says ironically).

For irony to work you need a level of intelligence and also life experience - that's why ironic humour is not so popular and slapstick, in your face, obvious humour is well liked.
Irony is humour on more than one level and most people only seem to see the most obvious level.
