A mirror image of the truth reflects the Truth (as our image reflects God's image.)
In my opinion--" it is a mirror image of the truth"-- is a positive statement, similar to--"you are right, or I agree".
I hope it helps.

Welll since a mirror image looks exactly the same as the original except it is EXACTLY the opposite... I would think that a mirror image of the truth is a lie. However, I think in this case they were trying to say that your story is a reflection of a real or true life situation.
However, is that what the person meant? Why not ask, "what's that supposed to mean?" That way the person can clarify what they meant and there's no misunderdtanding or confusion.

this is probably one of those situations,
where a person says exactly opposite to what it is intended to be said,
but still conveys correctly what is meant to be conveyd.
a mirror image is not exactly like the original (photograph),is also not a real one, laterally inverted, etc.
the phrase still conveys what the speakers wants to say.
"unpeel an orange" what does this mean?
