The examining board will keep permanent records of results.
Employers ask to see certificates so they can satisfy themselves that you're a responsible, reasonably intelligent person - they can't just take your work for it. After 16 years they probably just want confirmation that you passed Maths and English.
it's unlikely that they confirm everyobody's results with an exam board, but I'm sure they sometimes check a sample.
If you don't know who your exam board was, try asking your old school or the education office at the local council.

The results are kept on file while the school is open and operating.
The school have still got a record of the exams my parents took in the 1960's.
Certificates MUST be taken with you to EVERY job interview. The HR/Personnel Office takes photocopies of your certificates when you are appointed to the job.

The actual results, are archived on computer, by most exam boards. you should be able to get the contact details of your exam board online. I don't know if there will be a small charge for reissuing the certificate..
some companies do check qualifications.

Hi - I obtained proof of my GCE results 4 years ago - and I sat my exams in 1984!
I needed to know the exam board and where and when I sat the exams.
It might help you to know that the old Cambridge examining board later became known as OCR - Oxford and Cambridge examing board. This helped me to track my results.
Good luck!

Don't you have your own copies to show them?
If they need certified copies, you should be able to acquire them form the board - where I am from, every educational institution keeps records on file for 50 years.
When you get your copy, ask them if it's possible to get 2 or 3 in case you need to submit it somewhere else.
You may have to pay for it.
