The below trip is for staying on the mainland, in my opinion the better choice for a short trip.
Day 1-
Stay one night in Athens to recover from the trip. Going into the center is no longer necessary as there are hotels around the airport as well. Rent a car- you may need an international license for this. Around $20- check with the rental company first.
Day 2-
Drive to Delphi. This is about a 3 hour trip. The site there is spectacular. Stay the night there, or in nearby Araxova(Arahova). There is a nice hotel there called Hotel Xenia.
Day 3-
Head down the mountain towards Itea. It's a small sea side city. Drive past it following the coast to the next town called Galaxidi. It's about a 30 minute drive. It's a charming little seaside town where the seafood is very good. If the weather is warm you can sit outside and have lunch. It has all the charm of an island village. There is a windmill up the hill that is worth the 20 minute hike if you have the time.
Continue on the main highway towards the Rio-Andirion Bridge. This used to be a ferry ride across but the new bridge is spectacular and worth it (there is a toll).
On the other side head towards Patras. This is a rather big port that services ferries going to Italy and other destinations. Your goal is to make it to Pyrgos or the town of Olympia to see the site of the original Games. Since that is another 4-5 hour drive Patras may be a good stopping point.
Day 4-
Complete drive to the site at Olympia. This will probably be the longest day on the road. The site can be done in a few hours and hopefully you arrive there by lunch time. If there is time left in the day head east towards Nauplion (Nafplion). Another great seaside town with a castle on a hill in the center overlooking the bay. An exhilarating view if you make it up there. There are numerous hotels in Nafplion to choose from.
The drive takes you through some mountainous terrain so if you would rather save it for the next day stay in Olympia.
Day 5-
Nafplion is a great town to walk around. There is a lovely old section with neo-classical buildings and restaurants everywhere.
Just outside of Nafplion there is Mycenae and Argos, both with great sites to see. There is enough to do and see in Nafplio to stay the night again.
Day 6-
Leave in the morning and head to Epidavros, about an hour away. The site there is the old theater where if you stand directly in the center of the stage, people in the upper seats can hear you perfectly clear without you raising your voice. Early surround sound, I guess.
By lunch time you can get back on the road and make your way to Corinth. The site of Acrocorinth is quite fascinating. From Corinth you are about an hour to an hour and a half from Athens. The drive back is mostly highway and takes you through the industrial outskirts of Athens. Still, you will drive past the island of Salamis.
The highway divides on the outskirts of Athens, one direction bypasses the center and takes you straight to the airport, the other takes you into the center of Athens.
If day 7 is your last full day I would suggest staying at the airport anyway. It is easy to get into the center from the airport either by bus (40 to 50 minutes) Metro, (20-30 minutes), or cab 20-30 minutes and about 30 euros.
Day 7-
The Acropolis and sites around it are not to be missed. The old Olympic stadium, built for the 1896 games, Hadrian's Arch, the Temple of Apollo to name a few. The Plaka, the neighborhood directly below the Acropolis is filled with restaurants. Some are more touristy than others. For a more unique dinner experience head down past Monastiraki in to the neighborhood of Psiri. This is the old garment district where there are many new restaurants and bars.
Monastiraki is the place to get all your souvenirs and novelty items as well.
From the Metro stop at Monastiraki you can take the Metro back to the airport.
Day 8- Fly home
If you are in search of a more relaxing trip, you can pick any of the major islands, Naxos, Mykonos, Syros, Tinos and spend a week on them. The harbor near the airport is Rafina and it has daily ferries to most islands although Pireus is the main port and now quite easy to get to via the metro, though it does require transfers. To get to Rafina you will have to take a cab, though it won't be more the 30 minutes.
Flying to an island is expensive and usually hard to find seats during peak tourist seasons. Ferry travel is less expensive but in late summer, strong winds can delay or cancel trips. You also have choices of boats, from the old slow ferries (cheapest) to the fast catamarans (expensive).
Either way, enjoy your time there.
