We had rats that moved in underneath our garden shed. The only way that worked for us was good old fashioned spring release rat traps. For bait we used peanut butter. When we tried poison they totally ignored it. With the traps, there isn't any question if you got your rat or not. Be prepared to catch a quite a few of them. If you see one then you know that there are a few you don't see. The worst part of the job is emptying the trap. I'm too squeamish for that but luckily my honey is there to do these things. Good Luck and Happy Hunting!!! :)

do NOT use poisons, especially if you have pets. if you do use poisons any pets (yours or neighbors) have the risk of getting the rat then ingesting the poisons themselves.
get 2 small shallow dishes. in one put instant mash potato flakes. in the other put some water. when the rats eat the flakes then drink the water, the flakes will over expand the stomach and then no more rat.
this is for ceri who said they are horrible smelly things. well arent all animals smelly in one way or another. rats are actually VERY clean little critters, and smart. they make wonderful pets, but the wild ones carry a bunch of diseases
