You have to ask for it. Because it is how companies track and report their finances, they generally only give them out when necessary (such as to receive payments or file returns).

If a publicly held company you can find it on their SEC filings but I caution in relying on that approach. You may actually need the number of a subsidiary and not the parent company.

A tax ID # for a company is the equivalent of a social security # for an individual. If you have a truly legitimate need for it, ask the company and they will give it to you. If not, expect them to guard the info the same as you would if someone asked you for your SS# for no apparent valid reason.

As a citizen..it's your SS#, if an immigrant you are issued one also. As a business you have to apply for one. If you're looking for one of a non-profit, it's usually public information but you might need help finding it.
