If they can learn how to manage inflation well enough then they will very easily surpass the US and probably the European Union combined. In my eyes at least, they just need to slow down but if they keep on going at the rate they are and not control inflation better then the whole world will feel it.

People badly overestimate when China & India can get bigger than the US. It is NOT possible for that to happen within 10 or 20 years -- completely impossible.

If all goes well for China, it MAY have a larger aggregate economy than the US by about 2050. India, not before 2075 or so. But growth will necessarily slow down for both countries, especially China. That's just aggregate economy -- to be sure nether country can have anything like the total influence of the US this century.

China will additionally suffer from aging demographics (thx to the one-child policy), and it is entirely possible that that will undermine China's growth so much that it will NEVER catch up to the US, and that within a few decades growth in the US will be outpacing China's and actually widen the US gap. Long run my money's on India versus China.

I think that one could argue that China could collapse under its own weight.

First, many business are still owned by the state, and most banks are either owned or closely managed by the state. As a result, many outsiders think the investment choices are very inefficient, even though Investment is proceeding quickly,

Second, cities are becoming severely congested -- overcrowded and heaviliy polluted. Read "Collapse" by Jared Diamond -- he paints a fairly grim picture of the environmental degradation that is occurring, because the economy is outstripping the world's resources (lumber, coal, food).

Third, China has been keeping its exchange rate undervalued. This can't go on forever. If the currency starts to appreciate rapidly, the economy will come crashing down. If this happens, it will bring the U.S. down too.

If this is the case, I'm moving to a different country. They've destroyed theirs, and they'll do the same thing to ours. Ain't equality and anti-racism, and TOLERANCE of other cultures wonderful???? They teach tolerance of these cultures in the schools. When I was young, no one had to teach us how to put up with certain people. It wasn't necessary. And when it comes right down to money, they can bloody well keep it.
