Yes, of course they should.

Council workers are there to reduce the unemployment figures, so another layer of council workers is entirely good for the British economy. It doesn't actually matter what they do.

The only time to worry is between the hours of 9am and 4pm, but not of Friday afternoons when they will have a meeting.

Monday morning is also probably a good time to light up, because they will probably be holding a staff training seminar, with expert advisers from the health-service in attendance.

Of course, they will all have their little vans, and protective uniforms; possibly a radio-link to a central nerve centre, who in turn will have a hot-line to the riot-squad. They will all be issued with little notebooks and pens, identity cards costing £50 each, and they will receive a full pension; largely funded out of tobacco revenues.

Of course, it's not a police-state, because they aren't policemen, but they know people who are.

They will issue on the spot fines of course, and that will probably be about £60.....about the same as the revenue on a packet of 20. You can contest this and take the matter to court, which of course, and self-respecting smoker should do. The system would then clog up like a bookies ash-tray, very quickly.

It's just a game played by people who have nothing better to do, no real prospects and who would otherwise sit around griping and voting for the opposition.

Blow smoke in their faces and tell them to get a proper bloody job!

The councils already police enviromental health matters so why cant they do this? The police wont have time even though the police call centres will be inundated with callers demanding that resources be redeployed from the fight up the road because someone is watching with a *** in his mouth.

The clue is in the question! The *police* should police the ban like any other law.

Not enough police on the beat to combat serious crime.
Not enough immigration officers to control our borders and ensure illegals and undesirables stay out.
Not enough space in prisons so dangerous people are let loose on the streets.

So yes the answer to all our problems must be to make sure people don't smoke in pubs.

No they should not. Many local councils are making staff redundant due to government cuts,so I'm amazed that money for this issue has suddenly appeared. It should be policed by the owners/management of the premises.

The Police don't have the resources and so it is down to the council. This is not new ground, councils are now also responsible for parking tickets. The only alternative would be private security firms - no thanks!!

I have a feeling the general public will police pubs / bars etc.
It may need a degree of officials to do spot checks but Im sure if I were in a bar and some one lights up I would soon ask them to stub out!

No more runny eyes, chesty cough and smelly clothing when leaving a bar and Im an ex smoker!!

No, but the Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement agencies and local police will make spot checks. That way they can justify their funding from the budget.

You really expect politicians to get their own hands dirty. No, they will have the police do it.
