Sometimes you do pick up the twang of a place if you've been there for a while - hasn't she moved to America? My husband worked in Australia for four months and came back with a slight accent too...

To sell records.

One of her videos is set in America, and she has a speaking part, but they play it really muted to give the illusion she might be a yank.

It's better than it used to be: her record company seemed previously to want to convince us she was black. She sings soul, a genre largely filled by black people and the occasional Rick Astley white boy. On the front cover of her first album, there was a blurry black and white photo of Joss that had a purple sheen over it, so from the picture it was difficult to tell that she was white.

Joss herself implied that many record companies didn't think that white people could sell soul music. When asked why it took so long for a record company to pick her up, she answered "Well, I'm a bit pale."

This sort of thing has happened before, of course. The record company who put out Maddonna's first disco record brazenly pretended she was black, as white people didn't traditionally do disco, and they were afraid it would damage their sales.

Of course, the record companies are largely right. Most white attempts at music that has it's roots in the black community are at best embaressing. Witness disco 'classics' "I fell in love with a star ship trooper" and "Yes Sir, I can boogie", and most white hip hop.

It's the latest trend to pretend to be american. The more observant of you will have noticed the steadily increasing US influence over the last 6 months:

1) BBC 1 showing american news
2) americans buying into English football
3) americans in Big Brother
4) Dodge cars
5) blair bending over for bush

It's all part of america's re-branding attempts on the UK

She was more like Joss Stoned. What a load of rubbish she spoke. She should stick to what she does best - singing. I just hope she sorts that accent out!

Ha ha - I said exactly the same thing to my hubby. Last year one of the Radio 1 DJs played an interview with her from a couple of years back and compared it to the way she speaks now - it's like a totally different person. She's trying too hard to be cool.

Who is Joss Stone? And why would she want to lower her standards and dumb her self down to the American level? What is this world coming to?! Intelligent people don't insult or lower themselves, they try to better themselves, which is why they avoid the American mind set at all costs! Oy!

I have always said this, she has always used a dodgy American accent, just nobody ever picked it up until she was dressed like a **** and made a complete **** of herself on live TV. Who does she think she is?

I saw Joss once at a charity concert for kids with cancer...she arrived late and appeared under the influence....looked like she refused to sing with the other celebs and staggered around the stage...what a class act...never really liked her after that experience...
