I'm trying to deactivate symantec AV but it won't let me, when i try to unload service it tells me that i have to wait til all scans are finished. The scans that are still going are ones that have screwed up and stopped responding (one's been going since december) and i can't figure out how to stop them.

Have you looked in Task Manager to see if it shows the scans as Not responding? If it does highlight them and click on end program. You may have to do this a time or so if they do show up in there. There are other ways to do this but they are a little complicated, so the above answer would be the easiest.

Try using Winpatrol to stop it loading on startup. (Its easier than msconfig).
Then reboot in safe mode, and uninstall from there.

To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.
