Whether your relationship with your in-laws is great or whether you have the mother-in-law or father-in-law from hell, each of us has developed a favourite strategy for dealing with the in-laws. Mine has been to buy an answering machine for my phone. What's yours?

Whatever you do, don't ask your partner to take sides with you against his family, that just makes things so much harder all round. It's not fair to ask him to do that. I have tried to find common ground with my mother in law, something we both like and can talk about in "quiet moments" She has actually become quite a good friend, which is amazing as she totally disapproved of me going out with her son when we got together.

Well.. i think that distance and being nice to them when they are in the same room with you, no matter what is always the way i dealt with it when i was married. IN the long run, it worked. TOO Late though, cause i divorced right after..lol I was married for 10 yrs. They never liked me, but i did learn to keep distance, be nice when they are around, and never ever complain to them about your personal problems with thier son/daughter. Work them out yourselves.

Answering machine is a good one! So is Caller ID !! I'm very tolerant, but avoidance is my the best strategy!

You mentioned relationship in general. You didn't clearly shown your problem, so one can not see who is causing the trouble.

my mother in law was just like the Ray's mother on Everybody Loves Raymond....constant backhanded insults....I bit my tongue a lot.............
