I'm thinking of enrolling on a proofreading/copy-editing course through one of the big companies such as Chapterhouse. I already work in Publications, and I think it would be useful to my career.

However, does having a qualification from one of these companies really help with your career prospects? Will it help to get a relevant job when I decide to move on from my current position?

You can make good money from proofreading and I'm sure the qualification will help you secure jobs. I have considered it myself as spelling mistakes drive me crazy in books and papers.

Any class like this would be helpful in a publications type position. I currently have a job formatting and editing scientific manuscripts for submission to science journals. Our office has taken several courses of this type. Its always a good review and keeps you informed of changes in what is acceptable now that wasn't before.

It would look nice on a resume.
