If I don't know many Masons very well? How can I broach the subject or can I put myself forward without recommendation? Any sensible advice from Freemasons would be gratefully received.

Freemasonry is an oath bound fraternal order of men which derives from the medieval fraternity of Freemasonry. We adhere to many of the Ancient Charges, laws, customs and legends of operative Freemasonry. We are loyal to the civilian government under which we exist. We inculcate moral and social virtues by symbolic application of the operative stonemasons' working tools. and by allegories, lectures and charges. Freemasonry obligates its members to obey the principles of brotherly love, equality, mutual aid, secrecy, and confidence. We have secret modes of recognition that permit members to recognize each other as brothers. We require a through examination into the mental, moral and physical qualifications of a petitioner and we admit men into the fraternity by secret ceremonies based in part on legends of the Craft.

Once a person has decided to apply for membership he fills out a petition signed by 2 members of the Lodge he desires to join. He gives the petition to one of the members along with the required initiation fee. The petition is read at the Lodges next stated meeting when the Worshipful Master will appoint an investigating committee who will interview the petitioner in person. The investigating committee will report back to the Lodge at the following stated meeting when the members present will vote on the petitioner. One the petitioner is accepted he is given the three degrees of Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. There are certain requirements a candidate must meet before he can proceed from one degree to the next.

One must obtain the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason before he is allowed to wear any Masonic jewelry. One must have a Belief in a Supreme Being. HOLY BOOKS play an important role in all Masonic activities. The Tenets of the Masonic Fraternity are
" Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. " The Masonic Fraternity is NOT a Secret Society but rather a Society With Secrets. No matter what you may have heard the Masonic Fraternity is NOT Satanic in nature.

Suggest if you are interested in pursuing interest in the Masonic Fraternity if over the age of 18 you contact a man whom you know is a Mason for further information and an application. If under the age of 18 you can inquire about the DeMolay Organization.

If no local Masonic Lodge is available then suggest you contact the Grand Lodge of Masons for the State in which you reside.

The qualifications for membership of the Freemasons, and many other questions are all answered on website www.grandlodgeofallengland.org

You do not need to know a Freemason in order to become a Freemason.

To become a freemason, you simply need to ask a member of a local lodge if you can submit an application. The only requirements are that you believe in a higher power, that you are an adult male, and that you are of good character. You do not need to be related to a Mason, and contrary to popular belief, they will not find you and ask you to join. YOU MUST ASK.

The best way to go about this is to look up your local lodge. Just do a google search for the "Grand Lodge of (your state)" and then you can either contact them or look on the site to find the lodge closest to you. Most lodges give a phone number and an email address, as well as who to contact to join. If you need any help finding this information, feel free to contact me and I will help you.

You will most likely be asked to meet with some of the members of the lodge before you apply, and once your application has been submitted, they will check the references that you supply and do a bit of checking up on you to find out if you are a good person. This investigation process is much like checking references for a job. You will find that once you meet the members, they will be very helpful in answering your questions and will be happy that you are interested in the craft.

Many People think that being a Freemason gives them Many "Unearned" Advantages and wish to Join for all the "Wrong" reasons --- However if you Genuinely wish to become a Freemason -- Go to your Library and Learn as Much as You can -- there really is an Abundance of Literature available -- some of it Genuinely Enlightening -- but much of it written by Know-alls and of no value -- if you wish to continue you must ask a Friend who is a Freemason and who knows you to be of Good Character , Decent and Honest to "Propose" You" Good Luck to You ....

you have to know one to be invited to be one. once invited you have to be seconded, then you have to go though various initiation rituals involving swords and aprons. the non-secret parts of this are detailed in freemason websites. the secret bits only you will know if you ever get in.

as far as i understand you have to have someone in the family already be in it. it's not as glamorous as national treasure etc so just ask a member about it, they'll talk to you about the basics
