Instead of co-operating together on agendas they seem to drag the other side down in order to build themselves up when they should be doing what they are doing for the good of the country not themselves.

To Paul y yes it would seem that as a country we are sort of like a family and as you put it if a family cannot get along then why expect a country to be able to do it?

yes, in the perfect word this would seem the sense able thing.

BUT....................
THIS IS not a sense able world and the political parties will never agree to some a sen sable plan as they have their own selfish agendas
just like most married couples...they should be happy because they love each other...that's the perfect world scenario but how many marriages fail..over half and the majority of the ones that stay married fight every day or nearly ever day dragging the other side down in order to build themselves up when they should be doing what they are doing for the good of the FAMILY NOT THEMSELVES.. get the drift..?? if people (families_) can't get along what does that say about our society? or Govt? World?

Because you just cant fight human nature.

There are really only two types of people who become politicians.

1. Those who want personal gain (power / money / whatever)
2. Those who want to actually do something good.

Unfortunately those who want to do good are so hopelessly outnumbered by those that want personal gain that they either never make it into high-level politics or become corrupted in the process.

Once you have a whole bunch of people out for themselves in government, no amount of rationale can suppress the rampant backstabbing and deal-making. So at best you get clumsy, occasional, drunken steps towards progress, or more often, away from progress and the country becomes simply a platform for them to get what they want.
