There are a few theories on that. Scientists believe in the "big bang", which means that something (a star maybe?) blew up trillions of trillions of years ago, and the resulting explosion created everything in the known universe, with each star having the same basic makeup that causes it to burn, and with each planet being mostly carbon and having a pretty good orbit around a star.
Theoretical Physics try to explain the big bang with parallel dimensions; they say that 2 dimensions collided with each other and our universe is just the mess that the collision made.
Both of these explanations, while on the surface can be made to sound smart, are really just pushing the question back.
It's like a kid asking their mom where babies come from. The mom will tell some story about a stork dropping off kids at the doorstep, and that story will work because the kid doesn't know enough to ask where the stork got the baby from in the first place.
Scientists explain that our universe came from something blowing up a long time ago because people aren't smart enough to ask where the thing that blew up came from. Or where the alternate dimensions came from.
They disagree with the old theory about everything being created because they can't understand where the creator came from, but they swear by a theory that still can't explain where it came from.
Kind of silly, don't you think.
My theory comes from the Genesis account from the Bible because the idea that someone created all the insanely intricate symbiotic patterns from cell activities to weather patterns makes so much more logical sense then it all being an accidental explosion.

Depends on who you ask.
The prevailing scientific explanation is "The big bang theory" which basically says there was a big cosmic explosion and the earth is the result of a piece of space schrapnel.
But if you ask a totally unscientific christian, they'll tell you the earth was created 2000 years ago...by god.
Both are only theories....

well when i was a kid i thought the earth was a really, really giant fat naked cyclopes floating in space about a billion years ago, one of god's earliest creations billions of years before the dinosaurs came. I even drew a picture about it, but now i think god created the universe wear the earth was a rock covered in fire until the atmosphere was created then dirt and water came along, but who knows.
