Do you think schools are better funded, and have qualified teachers with quality learning materials?

What about school transport?

Where do you think all of this has gone in past 20 years and why?

They've definately got better equipment - computers in every classroom -and that's seen as necessary now.

Anyone working with children now from the teachers to the helpers and dinner supervisors and the Taxi drivers all have to have a background check done now -that's an improvement.

Teachers are also much calmer now - 20 years ago, a teacher could throw a board rubber at your head if you were not paying attention - now they have to reason with the child or exclude them from class

However, I think that the amount of respect that teachers now get is less

I do not know about the funding.

The learning materials are so much better now. They are based, more and more, upon research into learning. Teachers, in the main, are better able to deal with educational issues. The results do show. (ignore the cynics who know little about education)

However. we live in a couture which is very anti education. Just look at the portal of teachers in the media. There are also pressures on education which were not there before. Not only are teachers loaded with more and more from government and society but also knowledge grows massively each year.

Another problem is that with the coming of the national curriculum the comprehensive school was scrapped and made into grammar schools. That is to say all targets for a student became academic. The physical and practical skills became side-lined. There are many students (80% or so) who work best with other than academic structures.

In my opinion, the schools have enough funding, but as long as you have comprehensive education , the standard of education will never improve. We should go back to secondary modern system wher we learnt the subjects that mattered. That was the three "Rs". Reading writing and arithmatic. These are the main subjects that children should learn . you can of course include other subjects such as , Science, geography and history, but more time has to be given to the three Rs. tThen children will not leave school as illiterate as they are today.

One thought that springs to mind - 20 years ago there wasn't a National Curriculum, so there wasn't a single standard which a child anywhere in the country could expect to be taught to. Obviously the national curriculum has its downsides, not least in the amount that's forever being crammed into it, but whichever way you look at it it's certainly had a huge impact on education in the UK.

Schools do seem to have improved but they need more funding and teachers that specialise in special needs more dyslexia training. I personally would like to see children go to school slightly older as in america and stay on also bring back apprenticeships .
