I believe that it is a person with an IQ less than 30-40. An idiot is someone with an IQ less than 70.

Salty Dog is right...it was and still is the accepted clinical term for a person with a very low I.Q. However, it is not used in the vernacular by medical personnel to patients or their families, politically correct terms have replaced those terms, i.e. Mentally challenged, intellectually challenged, or just a challenged individual. Only official medical records, will record the clinical terms now. Hope that helps.

As far as I know, imbecile is just another term for idiot... anyone with low iq who lacks logical thinking abilities.

But then again I may be wrong... in which case it may just be cause I'm an imbecile myself... hmmmm
