Open System Preferences > Energy Saver. Be sure it is not set to never sleep.

Disconnect everything from the computer except the power cord. Restart and close the lid. If it still doesn't go to sleep, restart while holding shift key to get a message "Safe boot". Now see if it goes to sleep. If it finally does, that means you installed some software that interferes with the sleep setting. Look in System Preferences > Login Items and see what is there.

It's better to put your Macbook Pro via the Apple menu or from the login screen after logging out.
