I always gave my daughter a sanitary pad to take to school. She never needed it and I'm sure you probably won't either. It seems as though most girls start their periods at home, at night.
You do need to speak to your mother, though. I'm sorry you're not comfortable talking to her - what a pity. But see it as doing something for yourself, and look after yourself. You do need help and support at this time and you are entitled to ask for it.
Perhaps you can start off by saying: Mum, many of the girls in my class have their periods and I'm scared ....
That way she will have to deal with the reality, too.
Or else you can mention your stomach aches and back aches. She herself will probably be wondering how to bring the subject up. She's going tohave to help you once your period comes, even if only by supplying sanitary products, so grit your teeth and get it over with. Good luck. And email me if I can help - I've got two daughters.

When I started my period for the very first time at age 13 I actually had it start at nite so didn't go to school for a few days b/c of it.

After a while when I did go to school and was on my period I made sure I took extra pads with me. I did have a situation where one of my classmates noticed that some of the blood got on my pants and I just said thanks and tried to keep extra pairs of panties with me too.

As for the issue of talking to your mom b/c you aren't close it could also be that she's embarrassed to discuss the issue with you. The ideas given by the other posters about how to start the conversation are good and also talking to a school nurse. If you can't do that either try talking to a trusted adult friend if you have one that you can talk to.

As for the issue of starting in school if you have an idea of when your period is coming for that month make sure to have some pads on hand and an extra pair of panties. Then just raise your hand and let this teacher know that you need to go to the bathroom or to the nurse. You don't have to explain but if he does ask you just say something like, "I don't feel well".

I hope that this is of some help hun.

Well i know that we all would think that it is not bad to ask your mother. Maybe this can bring you closer. BUT of course we dont know what is going on with you and her- and your relationship. I would suggest you talk to your school nurse, or school counceler, and start wearing a pad, or roll out paper toilet shaped like a pad, and tuck the back part between your butt cheeks as to secure it. I was a kid once and i experienced embarrassing issues with that paper toilet thing, since it doesnt have a secure paste to paste it to your underwear. So if you can buy yourself some always with wings, and start wearing them. Yes it is about that time in your life, at your age to be starting your period. I know it's tough, but dont worry you will be alright. All girls go through these things, and it is best to talk to a trusted adult female that can tell you/ teach you and what to do. By the way, when you do start, and if your not alergic to aleve pain killers. Your gonna need some. Very painful cramps, but nothing us girls can't handle. Hope all goes well.. and dont worry.. everything will be alright. By the way, try telling your mom, what can you loose?

You are going to have to talk to someone. You should keep a feminine pad and maybe an extra pair of panties in your purse. If you don't carry a purse, start carrying some sort of bag.

Now is a good time to start realizing that sometimes you have to do things that are not that comfortable. Talk to your mom. It won't be as bat as you think. Remember she went through the same thing.

Hi Megan, Sorry you are not close to your mom. I would start carry a pad or a tampon(juniors) and be ready when you start. The person who answers first was right about talking to the school nurse. She can help you and answer all your questions. Good luck Megan. A Friend.

Try talking to a school nurse or a school counselor.
