Now a lot of people seem to think that golf is a sport but are they really deluding themself, isn't it really just a stroll around the park with an occassional bit of arm swinging of the type that you might get at a senior citizens keep fit class.

I think it's more of a sport than pub games - i.e. darts and snooker - and look at how much tv coverage they get. At least it involves some sort of skill and physical exertion.

After reading some of these responses, I couldn't believe my eyes. Now a sport is what you make of it, anything with a clear winner and points scored (which is my argument against figure skating and cheer, etc...) is a sport. A game of golf can be competitive or friendly, but anyone who has swung some clubs off the tee and putted on the green knows it is one of the most difficult games to master. A combination of athletic ability and sheer skill are essential. Try making that 18 hole walk with a bag, it will def get a sweat going on a nice day. And the reason Mark Twain made that quote is that he would constantly admit that he wasn't any good at the game, read a biography of his some time.

If a sport would take hours of standing and slow arm swinging, decent clothing, not getting dirty, and a impossibly quiet audience, then golf would be a sport. Otherwise, golf to me is something very subjective and is meant only for the people playing it. God knows how people actually tune in and watch it for hours long!!

If driving a golf ball 300 yards is easy, then everyone would do it. Also try putting hundreds of times a day everyday for a year and see how your abs feel.

If there's no sweat involved, it's not a sport. Swinging at a ball once in a while and walking after it... Seriously, come on...

I play racquetball - now THAT'S a sport.

I agree, i see a sport being something where you actually make contact with your opponent/s, like Basketball, American Football, Soccer, Rugby and so on, its like Darts, its more a hobby than a sport

Spike Milligan didn't. He said that golf spoils a good walk.
