This should not be a problem, go to the sink waste outlet, take off the connection for the pipe that goes through the wall and withdraw this piece of pipe, take it to a plumbing supplies place and purchase an elbow and length of pipe to fit go home and fit it. You may need to buy 1 or 2 pipe clips to secure the pipe on the wall out side.

It could be either. Check on the piece of pipe remaining for clues. All joints will have the size on them. Trace them back to the sink until you can read the size. If you cant find a clue, measure the diameter and compare it with pipe at your DIY. You can also use a piece of string. Wrap it round the pipe and mark it. Take that to your DIY and try it on their pipe.

southern standard code says the kitchen sink waste pipe should be 2 inches in size

Could be either.....measure it.

we've got 40mm on kitchen sink, baths, showers and basins

single vanity basins tend to be 32mm.

solvent weld is much neater solution as the fittings are smaller than pushfit or compression.

Generally, UK, ! 1/2 inch /40 mm.
You will need to joint to your existing, do not use 'Push Fit' fittings, they only fit the pipe from the same manufacturer. Instead, use the screw compression fitting, they have rubber seals inside, are more 'size tolerant'

Swimming pool installers could answer this question better than any answer you are likely to get here.
