I have been up all night doing this English project. The project involves a looooong list of literary devices. I have to find a quote in the book, "Their Eyes Were Watching God", by Zora Neale Hurston, that is an example of each device. I'm almost done with the project, but I'm having trouble finding two quotes from the book that are examples of Onomatopoeia and Irony.

I have looked, and looked, and looked, and re-read and re-read. I can not find any use of onomatopoeia or irony in the book, specifically in the first ten chapters.

As a final resort, I come here to ask. Can anyone help me? Or could you simply point me in the right direction. I just need help with onomatopoeia and irony, but it has to come within the first ten chapters of the book. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

In Janie's address to God, Hurston ironically juxtaposes a pleading subservience to God ("Master Jesus") with a deprecatory reference to gamblers ("nasty *******"), suggesting an internal struggle with racist attitudes, class bias, and patriarchal power structures. Hurston adds another layer of IRONY when, after asking God for a gun and a chance to shoot the gamblers, Janie turns back to the imaginary critics to defend Tea Cake's possession of a knife.
