Pick pocketing, purse snatching, and various types of scams are the most common forms of crime confronting visitors. These types of theft are usually reported at crowded markets, beaches, parks, and tourist attractions. Incidences of violent crime, such as armed robbery, have risen over the last year, including reports of armed robberies in expatriate residential areas. Take security measures, such as traveling in groups and avoiding travel at night. Travelers who limit their display of jewelry and handle their cash discreetly reduce their vulnerability to crime. Carry limited amounts of cash and only photocopies of key documents.

International credit cards are accepted widely across the country, and that's why growing number of travelers have been victims of credit card fraud after using their credit cards in Ghana.

Perpetrators of business fraud often target foreigners. While such fraud schemes in the past have been largely associated with Nigeria, they are now prevalent throughout West Africa, including Ghana.

Scams typically begin with an unsolicited communication (usually by e-mail) from an unknown individual who describes a situation that promises quick financial gain, often by assisting in the transfer of a large sum of money or valuables out of the country. A series of “advance fees” must be paid in order to conclude the transaction, such as fees to open a bank account or to pay certain taxes. In fact, the final payoff does not exist; the purpose of the scam is simply to collect the advance fees.

Another type of fraud is by persons claiming to live in Ghana who profess friendship or romantic interest over the Internet. Once a relationship has been established, the correspondent typically asks the American to send money for living expenses, travel expenses, or visa costs. Sometimes a “hospital” or “doctor” telephones to say that the friend has suffered an “accident” and needs immediate financial assistance to cover medical bills. There are other variations of this scam, but all of them want to get money.

Police, however are friendly, honest and helpful. Hotels are secure facilities with 24/7 protection. And apart from what I listed, Ghana is a pretty safe country to visit.

By and large Ghana is a very safe country but there are a few things you need to be aware of.

I've been to Ghana and have never encountered the slightest problem. The people are incredibly friendly and hospitable and will do everything possible to welcome you and make your stay enjoyable.

The poverty and dirt will come as something of a culture shock but you'll get used to it very quickly. In fact, you'll get used to the whole way of life very quickly.

Now... possible problems. Ghana has a good reputation and is one of the more prosperous and democratic of African countries. As a result it attracts undesirable elements mainly from Nigeria, Liberia and Zimbabwe. These people sometimes masquerade as business men offering investment opportunities etc - decline all such invitations.

More worrying is the armed robbery. Roads in Ghana are unlit and out of towns they are often very quiet. Robbers will wait for a vehicle then rob the occupants at gunpoint. It's rare but it can happen. For your safety travel by day, with a Ghanaian or opt for the STC (coaches) when travelling between towns. Don't let that put you off, Ghana is overall a very safe country and you're more likely to run into problems in LA or London.

From a medical point of view - speak to a health advisor. You'll need anti-malarials, you also need a certificate of yellow fever vaccination to get into the country. Other considerations include hepatitis, rabies, cholorea, typhoid etc.

Ghana is pretty safe, but you must keep in mind that there are bad people everywhere. I was in Ghana this past summer and got mugged, but that's rare and the cheif of my village got involved and everything. I'll be going back though- I don't consider it to be a violent or "un-safe" place. Like I said, there are bad people everywhere. But if you're going ou at night or to new place or something, definitely go with a Ghanaian, you're even less likely to be messed with that way!

If you are from the US, the government posts a web page about alerts in foreign countries. Do a goggle search on Ghana and look under tourism. Go to the US State Dept. and look for travel advisories.

Safer than South Africa who are still trying to get over their "perceptions" about crime.
