I f only staying off shore for under 30 days

Depending on your nationality, and the duration of your visit, you may not need a visa to visit South Africa at all. In your case it seems you'll not need one. Australians can stay in South Africa up to 90 days without a visa. Read all about it here, http://sbio.uct.ac.za/conference/visas.php

Not if you are offshore and the added bonus is that you will also not need body armour and a gun.
