I certainly would keep a "not well known words"-dictionary at hand for people who feel the need to speak in a "swollen" way like that.
It's just a status-symbol, and to me it only proves these people are not confident enough to just use the language they grew up with.
(Mind you, I CAN understand when someone in a public function wants to get rid of a certain dialect, but there's no excuse for trying to use as many difficult words in one sentence as they can. Grrrr)
