If you think about an individual, why he/she is poor? It could be that he/she born in poor family, and doesn't get enough education because no fund or laziness.

If you think about a state, why the people in some state is poor? It could be the state has been in the state of war. It is known that war affect all region of life.

In a competitive life, some rich person would keep the poor people still poor, so the rich could keep being rich.

Because there are greedy people in this world.

(edit) I hate when people attribute being poor to laziness. Does anyone really think that people choose to live in poverty because they like it and don't feel like working? People sometimes don't realize how fortunate they are and forget that other people may be in completely different situations than they are. I do concede that there may be some, but a very small percentage. The vast majority of people are willing to work hard.

But in some cases, working hard doesn't even pay off. Working at minimum wage ($5.15 an hour), a person will make $824 a month. Subtract rent alone and that doesn't leave much for heat, let alone groceries. How about trying to buy a car to get to work at that income level?

Our CEO's and employers are willing to pay those kind of wages, while themselves making millions. That's where the greed comes in, in my opinion. Yet, that's not enough. They then leave Americans unemployed because they opt to set up sweat shops in third world countries where they pay cents an hour--creating more poor people--so they can get richer.

For people who think that in order to have money, a person just needs to get up off their lazy butt, try harder, apply themselves at school, etc., it's not that easy. Anyone who says that has obviously never had to try to do anything when their last meal was 3 days ago. And in order for that starving child to really suceed financially in life, he would have to be getting nearly straight A's and be the star of the football team so he could get that full-ride scholarship because no one else is going to be paying for his education.

It's the attitude that poor people are lazy that hurts our social service programs. The attitude that poor people don't work. That they don't want to. Many poor people work. I recently calculated that there are 23,451,000 people in the US who are working and have no health insurance. That says a lot. That's a whole other rant though.

If you can figure that out you will be way ahead of anyone else I assure you. In addition to your question one might ask Why do those with more money than they could ever spend use the excuse that people are poor because they don't make the effort to improve their lives and allow themselves to believe it is alright to refrain from extending a helping hand because of some ignorant belief that the only help for the poor is turning a blind eye and calling it "tough love" forcing them to suffer and find a way to help themselves. Is this suppose to be someone's idea of building character? In my opinion anyone who refuses to give back by giving a leg up to those less fortunate is a perfect example of an ultimate character flaw and is this world's most evident weakness.

I have not heard this answer yet, but wars, mainly civil wars create most of the worlds poor and famine stricken people. I remember when Ethiopia went through it's civil war and watching all the pictures of the starving children on TV, even more recently was Somalia, and I'm sure there are a lot more out there, but you get my point I hope.

Nationalism and Geography> If you just look at the US there is large differences in the wealth and income in different places. Economics predicts that the movement of people and resources would level things out, but people are attached to their homes and families and are reluctant to move for better economic opportunities. Resources move to the location where production is most efficient. This results in pockets of poverty, even though we all share the most productive economy the world has ever seen. When viewed on a global level the additional barriers of movement of resources, trade restriction, and particularly movement of people imposed by nation states allow the pockets of poverty to extend over whole countries,.The movement towards globalization is supposed to fix this problem, but trade is not yet really "free", The rich nations subsidies their farmers, lowering world prices on the products of poor nations which depend on farming for income. Special provisions are written in trade agreements to favor certain companies, and list gos on. The countries that stared ahead stayed ahead in the relative wealth, but most places there is improvement in absolute terms.

In the US, there is no excuse for someone who is healthy and of sound mind to be poor for their entire life. Many people start out poor, but opportunities exist in this country for all who are willing.

However, this is not the case in much of the world. In other countries corruption and instability reduces (and in many cases, eliminates) the opportunity available to poor people.

The same reason that there are rich people.
People get out of life what they put into it. Simple as that. In the United States, education is free. You can go and apply yourself or you can be a goofball and not go and learn anything. Education is the key. Ambition is the key. Drive. Determination. Work ethics. If you don't have it you will be poor.

There are people in different condition. And condition of people are changing especially when we, collectively change our view about what we see.
Grameen Bank believes that the poverty is not created by the poor, it is created by the institutions and policies which surround them.
Muhammad Yunus, the founder won the Noble prize which was the small part of his effort and accomplishment of true success.
Look into it which blow my mind, mind over the matter.

There are so so many reasons: government won't help the poor, laziness, lack of education, health issues, greedy Americans won't help, addiction to alcohol and/or drugs, and so so many more things that I don't even know about! It is so disturbing how there are so many people in other countries who are dying when they could receive help, so many people who are living their lives without knowing about Jesus. SO many people we could help just by sending a little of our money. It is sickening when I think of we as Americans with our big fancy houses, with our expensive cars, there are so many unneeded items we waste money on and there are people in America and other countries who are dying and who are ill but could be helped. We miss so many opportunities and it is so sinful!!
