Black carbon from soot can land on snow/ice covered lakes and absorb more heat than the white snow generally reflects. This in turn, may have caused earlier melting of frozen lakes. Luckily the Clean Air Act requires the use of better filters in industry that pretty much put an end to this. Random I know.. but you asked.
